Background and Rationale
The Nuba Mountains region of Sudan has been severely impacted by prolonged conflict, displacement, and economic instability. These challenges have led to widespread food insecurity, limited access to education, and disruptions in community livelihoods. Vulnerable populations, particularly school-aged children, face the dual burden of malnutrition and lack of access to quality education. Hunger and poverty have become major barriers to school attendance, as many families are forced to prioritize survival over education.
To address these challenges, Education in Crisis (EiC) launched the Relief Kitchen Project—a community-driven initiative aimed at providing nutritious meals to schoolchildren and their families. By tackling food insecurity, the project seeks to improve educational outcomes, enhance children’s health, and strengthen community resilience. Additionally, the project promotes local economic development by sourcing ingredients from local farmers and vendors, ensuring that its benefits extend beyond immediate food relief.
EiC implemented this initiative under the Norwegian Refugee Council’s (NRC) Cash Transfer Groups program, leveraging its expertise in education in emergencies and community-based interventions. The project aligns with EiC’s broader mission of ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has the opportunity to learn, thrive, and reach their full potential.
