How is EiC helping to achieve the SDGs?

SDG 4 aims to Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. Education in Crisis (EiC) has been committed to ending education crisis since it was founded in 2019. By building resilience, adapting to emergencies, promoting quality education and improving learning outcomes, our work helps address the root causes of Africa’s human capital underdevelopment and ensure quality foundational learning for all.
SDG4 is a key enabler of most other SDGs. Unfortunately, global progress in education has not been fast enough. According to UN, only 58% of students worldwide achieved at least the minimum proficiency level in reading at the end of primary schooling in 2019. A large share of countries is moving backwards in learning outcomes at the end of lower secondary school. Improvement in upper secondary completion rate has slowed since 2015. Some regions, including sub-Saharan Africa, are facing teacher shortages, high student-teacher ratios, and inadequate training and lack of professional development opportunities for teachers. Accelerating progress towards SDG 4 should be prioritized as it will have a catalytic impact on achieving the overall 2030 Agenda.

How EiC works to achieve SDG 4

To accelerate the realization of SDG 4, EiC is leading with urgency and innovation in delivering inclusive, equitable, and quality education to children affected by poverty, discrimination, displacement and crisis-impacted regions. This includes scaling up its accelerated learning programs for out-of-school children, expanding school feeding initiatives to increase retention, and investing in the training of local teachers, especially female educators, in underserved areas. EiC has also prioritized the use of data-driven tools such as the Learning Crises Monitor (LCM) and the Education Crisis Response Dashboard (ECRD) to track disruptions and guide timely interventions. By working at the grassroots level, EiC is ensuring education reaches the most vulnerable—children displaced by conflict, girls at risk of early marriage, and youth in remote or neglected communities including in Sudan and South Sudan.
EiC is amplifying its advocacy voice at both national and continental levels to influence policy and resource allocation in favor of education and humanitarian youth workers in frontlines. Through campaigns like “1 Million Africans for Education,” EiC is mobilizing Africans to hold governments accountable for providing free, quality education and ensuring that marginalized groups are not left behind through committing $1 to empower their voices. By building strong partnerships with ministries of education, local NGOs, and international bodies, EiC is working to strengthen education systems, support policy implementation, and help embed education as a pillar of humanitarian and development responses—making SDG 4 not just a goal, but a shared and achievable reality for all. SDG 5: Gender Equality

SDG 5 highlights the need to Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. EiC works to end all forms of discrimination against all women and girls everywhere.
Facts: Worldwide, nearly half of married women lack decision-making power over their sexual and reproductive health and rights. 35 per cent of women between 15-49 years of age have experienced physical and/ or sexual intimate partner violence or non-partner sexual violence.1 in 3 girls aged 15-19 have experienced some form of female genital mutilation/cutting in the 30 countries in Africa and the Middle East, where the harmful practice is most common with a high risk of prolonged bleeding, infection (including HIV), childbirth complications, infertility and death. This type of violence doesn’t just harm individual women and girls; it also undermines their overall quality of life and hinders their active involvement in society including access to inclusive, equitable, quality education.
