Statement by EiC on the Situation in the DRC

Situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

September 20, 2025

Education in Crisis (EiC) expresses deep concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where armed conflict, displacement, and instability continue to threaten the rights, safety, and future of millions—especially children and youth.

The escalating violence in parts of eastern DRC has forced thousands of families to flee their homes, disrupted access to basic services, and severely undermined children’s access to safe, inclusive, and quality education. Schools have been attacked or used for military purposes, teachers displaced, and entire communities left with no access to learning.

EiC stands in solidarity with the children, educators, and families affected by this crisis. We call on all actors—local, regional, and international—to uphold the right to education in emergencies and to prioritize the protection of schools, learners, and teachers.

As an organization committed to education in crisis settings, we reaffirm our commitment to work with partners in the region to assess needs, mobilize support, and advocate for education to be at the center of humanitarian response efforts in DRC. Every child, regardless of their circumstances, deserves the chance to learn, grow, and thrive.

We urge donors, governments, and humanitarian agencies to increase investments in education in the DRC and ensure that learning continuity is not an afterthought, but a central pillar of crisis response and recovery.

Education is in crisis and so the children of the DRC’s dreams.
